I am a UK based artist, a painter of abstract landscapes, the figure and occasional still life. Having previously taught life drawing and groups in the field, as well as in the classroom, observation is fundamental to my own work. I respond to subjects using marks, shapes, and colour. I view colour as both exciting and challenging, and breaking the rules of convention is part of the process in the development of my work.
"When I paint green, it doesn’t mean grass; when I paint blue, it doesn’t mean sky."
Henri Matisse
"I approach my work in a vaguely dialectical way through a form of criticism, trying to investigate a mixture of logic, imagination and empirical accident, trying to break the logical mould."
John Hoyland
